Introduction
A connection between ritual music and communication
with the spirit world through altered states of consciousness has
long been recognised in the anthropological literature. This chapter
will explore these apparent connections through presenting a sample
of the ethnographic and theoretical literature as it pertains to the
role of music in the induction of altered states of consciousness,
frequently referred to as trance states. In particular this chapter
will focus on the practices broadly known as shamanism and spirit
possession, and the role that music plays within them.
